Why Oaxaca? It started with a trip to an art museum and a glimpse at the photo - Our Lady of the Iguanas, Juchitán, Oaxaca, Mexico (1979) with a caption stating, “In Juchitán, Zapotec women appreciate an elevated role in society, forming what some refer to as a matriarchy.” And then my brain went like this: Matriarchy? I wonder if a happy story about the realities of menstruation lies in these Indigenous communities. If women appreciate an elevated role, perhaps their periods are celebrated? [insert quick Google search about Zaptoec menstruation customs] A couple links, some interesting bullet points, but SPOILER ALERT - no solid info. So now, we must go! We, being myself (Emma McHugh) and friend/student at PLNU (Ceci Corona) to ask women in Oaxaca City & Juchitán about their menstrual experiences. We leave March 6th! You can provide menstrual products for individuals in Oaxaca & support our quality research HERE or through VENMO. $5 - $20 - $100 - $50,000 all great options. And feel free to share with your friends (:
